Students vs gate
so, Jeremiah and i will pick up two month old Welsey today!!

Yesterday, in preparation for new puppy, we bought a house gate and puppy proofed the house--there are many fewer things for him to chew on now.  During this process, we needed to find a way to make the puppy gate fit the abnormally large entrance to our living room.  Seven undergraduate students were involved, from various grades and majors.  The goal was to make a 5 ft gate close a 6 ft entry.  The suggested solutions were as follows

Close the entrance with a couch
use legos
use cinder blocks
use boxes
make the wall larger with wood
use particleboard to create a fence
use the gate from wall to couch
from wall to chair
from wall to table
from wall to desk
buy a bigger gate
close the entrance with two chairs

it took an hour before we thought to just prop the gate... lean the gate against two chairs so the puppy cant push it down, and cant get out.  A
whole hour.

If puppy can impact a propped gate at the proper velocity (which my family's puppies sometimes do), it'll hit the chairs it's leaning against and bounce back and fall over ON THE PUPPY, who will startle backwards and yelp, but then be free to walk over the fallen gate. If the gate's at enough of an angle to prevent this, the puppy's usually able to squeeze behind it. Tying the gate to the chairs it's leaning on can help.

Don't feel stupid. It takes people time to come up with the best solution. But the lego idea was kind of retarded. ; )

Yay puppy! =)

The entrance thing really is a great example of intelligence vs common sense. Reading your list made me laugh.
